Why Science is Cool

On Thursday, Australia Day, Professor Alan Mackay-Sim was named the Australian of the Year.  He got that title because his research was on the nose…olfactory ensheathing (nose) cells to be exact.

Back in the 1980s, Prof. Mackay-Sim realized the very special cells inside the nose, that most kids pick, actually die every day only to be regenerated again the next day. I wonder how he came up with that idea, hmm? Anyway, he posed two questions; if the cells regenerate daily, do they have the potential to help regenerate other cells like in the spinal cord, and; if it could, could it be done safely in humans?

After years of research, he designed the procedure that took the cells from the nose, purified them and injected into the spinal cord at the top and bottom of the spinal injury.  Around five years ago, a European medical team conducted the first procedure on a 40 year old Polish man who became a paraplegic after a stabbing incident.  Three years on and after some intensive physiotherapy the man is able to walk with the assistance of a frame.

Not content with that, the now retire Professor also campaigned for using stem cells to gain a better understanding of brain disorders and diseases like Parkinson’s, schizophrenia and motor neurone disease. Mackay-Sim and his team have already identified the difference in nerve cell regeneration in bipolar and schizophrenia so it is proving helpful in understanding how the diseases develop in the first place.

It is for this reason, and many, many others why I think science is cool.

Hi Marina,

Fantastic blog this week! I found it really engaging and interesting to read. Your style was really well suited to a public audience and brought the subject to life.

Professor Mackay-Sim sounds like he has made an incredible contribution to the well-being of so many people over his career and I absolutely agree that discoveries like this make science cool.

Cheers,

Michelle

Hi Marina,

I completely agree that it's things like this that make science cool.

It's so exciting to hear about the progress that's being made in science now days. The speed at which new technology is being discovered and developed is so incredible.

It's also really interesting to hear about the amazing things, like regenerating cells, that our bodies do without us even realizing.

Hi Marina,

I love stories like these, so thanks for sharing! It makes sense that cells in your nose must regenerate quickly, but it's an oversight everyone in the world made, apart from Mackay-Sim.

You did a really good job summarising his work in your blog post this week. Just enough info to keep us informed without getting too into detail or boring.

You're right though, science is cool and I'm so fascinated in the search for "truth". I do worry sometimes we're learning so much, that it's making us a complacent race. We do things without fear of consequence, because we know our prowess in science can sort the problem. I'm sure many people aren't scared of global warming, because they're confident we will have found another habitable planet or something by then.

However, I digress! Great blog this week. I'm going to miss hearing your open and honest thoughts on things. Even if I don't agree with someone, if they're honest and their opinions are founded on fact, I'll have a lot of respect for them.

See ya!

Thanks marina very interesting topic. Who would have thought, it is all of these interesting snippets that are quite out of the box which make me think how amazing science and scientific developments are, i can only imagine what is coming in the future. Reminds me of the early discoveries of cures for things like smallpox and the like. Sometimes one persistent, great mind can make associations that others can't and think critically around issues, which i feel we have done with our report. We though critically, debated and got through it after much analysis which takes a lot of work but it is great to know we put our minds together and made it work :)

Thanks for sharing.
